BOU

Bangladesh Open University, Bangladesh

Established in 1992 by an act of Parliament, Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has opened up a new vista in a distance education in Bangladesh. Situated at a picturesque site of Gazipur, 30 kilometers north of Dhaka, BOU accommodates VC's office, administration and school buildings, library, printing and production division, distribution store and a modern media centre.

Prime objective of Bangladesh Open University is to transform the country's vast human resources into an educated and trained work-force by extending to them a wide range of academic programmes both formal and non-formal. BOU's programmes are aimed at every one, particularly working people and women and those socially disadvantaged groups,
who cannot enroll in traditional universities.
As a distinct mode of imparting education, Bangladesh Open University relies heavily on print materials, electronic media like radio-television and audio-video cassettes, tutorial services and specialized communication such as computer networking and internet. The use of these techniques helps BOU to take its academic programmes to the door-steps of people far and wide. It makes room for in-house education. The university has established seven schools, eleven divisions, twelve regional resource centres, eight coordinating offices and 1,000 tutorial centres. In its 21 formal programmes, BOU has over 700,000 students. Besides, BOU has 19 non-formal programmes designed to make people aware as to how to live a better life. Some of the programmes are in the areas of science, agriculture, poultry, livestock, ethics, and environment. The BOU has so far educated over 100,000 students in different courses and levels.
